Beautiful Blarney Castle

Calling to Niney and Papa below...

Yes, this is the stairs going up to the top of the Castle. Notice the rope-cord running up the middle? That's the handrail!

After the Ring of Kerry, we came to the village of Blarney, specifically to kiss the Blarney Stone. It's such a touristy thing, but we just HAD to do it! And what an event it was! We were at the Castle about a 1/2 hour before closing. Since the grounds stay open longer, we headed directly to the top of the castle by way of a circular and very narrow staircase. (The picture of the stairs Benjamin thought to take, and which I included above, makes them appear even more treacherous!) When you finally reach the top, you walk around the edge of the top floor looking down into the rest of the castle because the middle of the floor is not there! A little scary for someone as scared of heights as I am! To kiss the stone, you have to lay on your back, put your head completely back, and then a guard holds your arms and lowers your body until you can kiss the Stone. You are, quite literally, looking at the ground many stories below you, and the people on the ground can see you! The Castle grounds are very beautiful, and we enjoyed walking through them after kissing the Stone. We ate at a small restaraunt in town...fish and chips and Irish stew were the favorites tonight. We're settled into our B&B for the night, named the White House. It overlooks the village as well as the Castle. We will drive to Cobh in the morning, visit the Waterford factory, and then drive a short distance to Kilkenny.
